Garage Door Remotes

When you think of your safety and security you probably don’t think of your garage door remote as an important part of your security and safety. In fact, the remote is often the most overlooked part of the garage door.

In the past, most garage door remotes used a single code security technology but criminals found a way to “intercept” your codes radio frequency and could use it to break into your house later. Today’s technology uses “rolling code” security. This means that the code that your remote sends to the receiver, changes after every use.

Also, all garage door openers have a release switch so if your electricity goes out, at any time, then you can manually open and close th door.

When shopping for a garage door remote make sure you are buying a remote that is compatible with your garage door system. Just because the manufacturer says that it is universal doesn’t necessarily mean that it will work with your opener.

There are two main types of remotes that you can use, depending on your garage door:

  1. The single button or multiple button remote: Quite simply the single button opener would open one single garage door. If there are two or more buttons each subsequent button would be for its corresponding door. So you would need a two button remote if you have two garage doors that you want to control separately.
  2. The mounted remote: Commonly know as a keypad, this comes in handy if you leave your remote inside your home.

There are quite a few makers of garage door remotes and many of them are compatible with the others. However, the most well known brands with great reputations are “The Overhead Door Company” based in Dallas, makes the Genie remote, Chamberlain is most known as the “Liftmaster” company and the Wayne-Dalton Company in Ohio.

All of these manufacturers have been around for many years and are all highly reputable and rated companies in the industry.

When you shop for your garage door remote you’ll find many styles and varieties to choose from. In addition to your many choices, you will see that the best garage door remotes are an important part of your security and are reasonably priced.
